We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I LOVE this book, and give it “all the stars in the sky” Not since Scout and Jem Finch, have I met two young protagonists who take up a place in my heart. In this gut-wrenching novel, We Begin At The End, by Chris Whitaker, we meet Duchess Day Radley, Outlaw, and her brother Robin, and their mother Star who is unable to tend to her children. Duchess is strong, full of wit, fiercely protective of her brother. This is a story that captures my heart; siblings doing anything they have to do to protect one another. Whitaker weaves a story with troubled characters, who are seeking to redeem themselves. Along with well-crafted, and believable characters, the setting, is its own intrigue, from the beautiful beach town of Cape Haven in California to the mountains of Montana, it’s impossible not to get drawn in. What perhaps makes this book a five-star read is that the author could have chosen to make the ending tidy and clean, but like life, he crafted an ending that was perfect, yet heartbreaking. I highly recommend reading this book!
